Ever since fans began clamoring for a remake of Final Fantasy VII over a decade ago, anticipation has been high. The release of Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 partially fulfilled this wish, offering a mostly faithful retelling of the iconic Midgar section with a mix of new content and a revamped combat system. Now, with the arrival of the PS5 upgrade, a new DLC has emerged, shining the spotlight on everyone’s favorite ninja, Yuffie.

Episode INTERmission is a compact addition to the saga, introducing fresh storylines, a revamped mini-game, and enhanced combat mechanics that foster better synergy among party members. But does this expansion hold up to the main game, and is it worth your time? Let’s delve into it.

Set during the events of the main game, Episode INTERmission unfolds around the time Tifa ventures into Don Corneo’s mansion. Players assume the role of Yuffie, an agent/ninja from Wutai, tasked with infiltrating Shinra’s headquarters to steal a legendary materia. To execute this daring heist, Yuffie teams up with fellow Wutai agent, Sonon, and other allies. As they secure the necessary ID cards and navigate Shinra’s security, Yuffie and Sonon engage in intense battles to accomplish their mission. The storyline, though relatively brief, packs emotional depth and epic moments.

Yuffie’s endearing personality adds charm to the narrative, blending bubbly enthusiasm with moments of seriousness. Her dynamic with Sonon, who serves as a perfect foil to her playful demeanor, enriches the experience. Additionally, the return of Scarlet, head of Shinra’s weapons development, as the primary antagonist injects charisma into the storyline. Unlike the main game’s occasionally bloated narrative, Episode INTERmission benefits from its compact nature, delivering a tightly paced experience that seamlessly integrates into the lore.

The combat system retains its exhilarating action-oriented style, with players controlling Yuffie while issuing commands to Sonon. New mechanics, such as the ability to link up for powerful combos, enhance the strategic depth of battles. Yuffie’s versatile combat style, combining close-range attacks with ninjitsu abilities, offers satisfying variety. Boss fights maintain the epic, multi-layered nature seen in the main game.

Aside from the main questline, players can engage in various side activities, although most are forgettable except for the Fort Condor mini-game. This strategic diversion provides unexpected depth, though its impact on the overall experience is limited due to the DLC’s short length.

Visually and musically, Episode INTERmission excels. The iconic Final Fantasy soundtrack enhances the experience, while character models impress with their detail. However, occasional texture issues detract from the overall presentation. Moreover, the decision to make this a PS5 exclusive, despite its similarities to the original PS4 release, feels perplexing and excludes fans without access to the new console.

In conclusion, Episode INTERmission offers an enjoyable adventure that expands Yuffie’s backstory and introduces intriguing plot threads. With a playtime of around 3-4 hours, it’s a concise yet worthwhile addition for fans of the PS4 Remake, provided they have access to a PS5.

Honest Rating: 7.5/10
